Fans of Winterworld only know Scully's story from after he met Wynn. But what was life like for the traveling trader before he rescued a young girl and found a new reason to survive in the endless wastes of a frozen planet? Presented in stark prose by creator Chuck Dixon (author of the acclaimed Bad Times series) we learn for the first time of Scully's past from childhood to manhood in the brutal and unforgiving world where every day presents another challenge from death. Filled with the kind of breakneck pacing, savage action, and high stakes that have made the comic series a world renowned classic, Winterworld Book 1 The Mechanic's Song will thrill you, horrify you, and touch your soul. Find out how the saga begins!

“Chuck is a damn good writer who is really good at hooking you, giving you fun characters, and telling you one hell of an adventure story.” Larry Correia, Monster Hunters International, the Grimoir Chronicles

Winterworld The Mechanic Song edition by Chuck Dixon Jaye Manus Literature Fiction eBooks

I never read the original WINTERWORLD comic book epics but of course I had heard of them. Because of that I found the prose story compelling to read but I was going in cold, no pun intended.

As a brand new reader completely unfamiliar with the characters and the world I caught up quickly. While the book is clearly a sort of prequel or origin story to something preexisting the author never ever takes that for granted and the work us fulfilling for a first time reader. Unlike Sully I never felt lost in this WINTERWORLD

I found the events compelling, the action tight, and the characters relatable.

Whether or not the icepocalypse is realistic the characters and antagonists absolutely are.

Now I want to read the original comics.

Winterworld The Mechanic Song edition by Chuck Dixon Jaye Manus Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

While the concept was interesting and the writing good, I found this book to be quite dark and depressing. None of the characters were likeable. There seemed to be no hope in the storyline. Then there was the ending, which was really a non-ending. If the author turns this into a series, I hope he will inject a bit of light into the story.

I borrowed this book via Unlimited.
Good read, would definitely read the follow on story to see what happens next. Very surprising story line and plot.
The Winter world is unforgiving brutal and cold. In the middle of the next ice age a boy becomes a young man and learns his place in the world of unending cold. The story and characters are haunting. Well worth your time and stands alone. No need to have read the winter world comics from thirty years ago.
Dixon is known for tight, well-plotted, fast-paced, action-packed comics, and his long form writing is no different. He takes a character he created back in the 80s for the Winter World comics and gives us Scully's origin story. He also gives us a reintroduction to the harsh and unforgiving ice-covered Earth Scully lives in and the people (just as harsh and unforgiving) that live in it.
Back in the 1980's when Eclipse comics existed, they published a comic (recently republished and given a sequel) called Winterworld. In it, an ice age has ended civilization and only the mobile and brutal survive. The main character is Sully, who drives across the frozen wastes, trading goods. This book is his origin story. It starts with him as a kid, and goes into how he learned to be a mechanic. It's well written and enjoyable, but a little short and ends a bit abruptly. Still worth reading.
Chuck Dixon has been a long-time favorite writer of comics (Batman, Punisher, many others) and I've followed his comic book stories headlong as this pro deftly moves into prose. The Winterworld comics were exceptional but I wondered about Winterworld The Mechanic's Song. I read it on and was transfixed. It was an intriguing back story of our sturdy leading character, the on-the-go traveler Scully. He has been tough and taciturn in the comic stories, but this new novel takes us back to his younger years, before he met Wynn. You'll find out how he grew from a stoic child to a battle-scarred survivor of the icy cold hell of Winterworld. This book is a great place to start reading, or a superb flashback if you're a series fan.
