Well, the one thing I can easily say about BLACK ICE is that it was definitely... different. It's been a while since I've read an Anne Stuart novel and I forgot how bad her heroes usually are. And by bad I mean really bad - dark, cold, and ruthless are just a few of the adjectives that come to mind. Bastien is not nearly a nice man, not even to Chloe who I liked but also thought had some too stupid moments. There were a few times I could hardly believe such a strong and seemingly intelligent young woman could be so naive, but there you have it. However, for all of Bastien's callousness, it was nice to see him finally and truly care about something or someone - and that was Chloe.
With that being said this book was totally unpredictable and always kept me on the edge of my seat. I never knew what to expect from Bastien or his cohorts either for that matter. They seemed just as likely to slit each others throats as not. And that's another thing about Bastien, he has a couple of intimate scenes with a female associate of his. Personally I never like seeing any hero (or in this case even an anti-hero) have any sort of sexual contact with anyone besides the heroine, so this ticked me off a little. It was completely fitting with his persona however, so I can't say it came as any real surprise.
Overall this story was action-packed and wholly intriguing though, and I've never read anything quite like it. I also thought the chemistry and connection between Chloe and Bastien was strangely unique too. And while the ending felt somewhat rushed and wasn't entirely satisfying, I still enjoyed the story on a whole. I do wish it had included an epilogue though, as I still have a few lingering questions about this couple's future and how they'll make their relationship work. Regardless, I'm glad I read it and am looking forward to Book 2. I just hope we're able to get an update on Chloe and Bastien then.

Black Ice Anne Stuart 9780778321712 Books Reviews
I’ve never read any Anne Stuart novels, but I decided to pick this up because it was on a gamma hero list and I was interested to read more books involving not so heroic heroes. I typically don’t enjoy contemporary romances with dark love interests because they are usually over the top, but this wasn’t a billionaire romance, so it worked out well. Bastien was obviously some sort of agent/spy. Chloe was just an innocent translator who took a job in place of her friend and landed herself in the wrong place.
I enjoyed the book. Chloe wasn’t some crazy kick ass heroine, but she wasn’t an emotional doormat, either. I felt like her character was realistic and likeable. Bastien was mysterious and I think he treated Chloe like he hated her because he really wanted to get through a job without complications. He was rude, gruff, and yet he always did the right thing for Chloe in the end, which was interesting.
If you like romance and like that dark hero who has more depth to him than a stupid closet filled with S&M gear, this is a great read. I hate what passes for dark contemporary romance these days with the 50 Shades stuff, so I really loved that the book had a believable dark hero in a world that wasn’t paranormal.
Sometimes I enjoy reading about the jerk that should be the last man that you want to care for. Indeed sometimes those are the best characters….case in point Captain Jack Sparrow is a fantastic anti-hero and you totally root for him.
Is Bastien as good as Captain Jack Sparrow? Well, no he is not quite that awesome…but who is. He is a good anti-hero and the best part is that even though he meets good girl Chloe and they fall in lust/love not a spoiler because seriously this is a romantic mystery he isn’t automatically saved and destined to become a good person. Nope not our Bastien, he will sleep with her to get answers, push her away to protect her and twist her up in knots because it is fun. But he will also kill to protect her for reasons he can’t even fathom.
Chloe while completely intelligent and amazing with languages is a little bit stupid when it comes to danger and men. But alas I let it go so that we can continue on with the come with me if you want to live portion for the story. She does some truly stupid things in the course of the story but ultimately she is pretty likeable and strong most of the time even when she is pretty sure she is suffering from Stockholm Syndrome and that explains the attraction she feels towards Bastien.
“He was human, he was warm and strong and ready to kill to keep her safe. What more could a girl want in a man?”
Chloe takes a job as a translator for a private business group and in the middle discovers that she is in way over her head and the people at the meeting are more dangerous than she first assumed. When it is discovered she knows too much it is decided that Chloe has to die. Bastien knowing she is truly an innocent in all this decides to make sure to get her out and home, even if that means he burns a lot of bridges along the way.
So if you want a story revolving around a pretty decent anti-hero than this might be right up your ally.
